Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Mee

Don’t say bojio! Easily one of the most popular and known stalls at Chomp Chomp. There is always a long queue here, so be prepared for the long wait of at least 30 - 45 minutes. Their flavourful Fried Hokkien Mee comes in 3 sizes ($3, $4, $5) combined with prawns and squid and simmered in a rich broth. It is an amazing sight to see how the chef tosses and mixes the yellow and white rice noodles and artfully fries them in a very hot wok at just the perfect temperature till all the stock is absorbed into the noodles, making the noodles packed with flavours. The noodle has bits of egg, pieces of prawns and squid tucked away into the noodles, soaking up the gravy and natural ingredients of the other ingredients. The Noodles are also served well with a spoonful of sambal chilli sauce and calamansi.

The noodles have the taste of “wok hei'' (a hint of smoky flavours) as you bite into the noodles. The base was rich; the prawns fresh and you could still taste its natural sweetness. The squeeze of calamansi, gave the noodles a nice citrusy touch, while the addition of the chili sauce, completes the taste of the noodles. Overall, a well- balanced plate in terms of flavours, and frequent customers here rate Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles as the best among all the Hokkien Mee stalls, though taste is always subjective. This plate of noodles is definitely worth the wait to satisfy your supper cravings. Don’t worry, Ah Hock Hokkien Noodles opens all the way till 12am, so come down and try it for yourselves.

Tip: If you are planning to have dinner here, do come early around 6pm to beat the long queues especially on weekends!

Chomp Chomp Hai Wei Yuan Seafood BBQ (忠忠海味园BBQ海鲜烧烤)

There are a number of seafood stalls here in Chomp Chomp, but many would recommend stall #1. For the Sambal stingray there is a choice of sizes, ranging from $10, $12, $15.  The chef takes a piece of banana leaf, stingray and seasoning the fish with a thick layer of sambal, the chef then moves on to wrap the banana leaf over the fish before covering it up. Within the banana leaf wrapper, the stingray sort of bakes and steams at the same time. The banana leaf helps to keep all the flavours as the fish marinates inside.

Stingray

The stingray takes around 10 mins to cook, before being garnished with a handful of sliced red onions and served with calamansi and a side of shrimp based dipping sauce. The entire dish has a wonderful banana leaf roasted aroma to it. First time eating stingray? Unsure of the texture and taste? Do not worry, the taste of stingray is quite neutral and does not have a fishy taste at all. The stingray has a texture that is somewhere in between chicken and fish, being quite firm yet it’s juicy and soft at the same time. When eating, you can also taste a hint of banana leaf which is embedded into the fish. The sambal is a little sweet and spicy and has a roasted flavour to it. You can also drizzle the calamansi over the fish giving it that extra taste. What tasted good are also the bits of sambal that had been charred to give the stingray a beautiful smoky taste.

Store front image of Qi Xiang Chicken Pot taken by food blogger Seth LuiSource: Seth Lui

This hotpot place is located near Kovan MRT. It offers a whole variety of ingredients, like enoki mushrooms, chicken, quail eggs, tau pok, cheese tofu and many other usual hotpot ingredients. For around 20 to 30 dollars, you'll be getting unlimited broth with a large variety of hotpot ingredients so you can eat to your heart's content.

Pricing

Each hotpot costs $37.90 for a whole chicken and $26.90 for half a chicken. For the frog meat option, two pieces of frog legs cost $28.90 and four pieces of frog legs for $39.90.

For those who want to eat less, you may consider the hotpot with only two drumsticks for the S$25.90 for two drumsticks.

If you are still hungry after ordering their hotpots, you can get additional ingredients at $2.90 per plate If you love meat, you can get extra pork or beef for $5 a plate.

Broth

Thickness is the measure of how salty the soup is in hotpot lingo.

You may also choose the spiciness level of the broth. Ashlyn from Eatbook suggests you get the normal spice level “so you get a nice splash of heat that complements the flavourful soup instead of a ma la pot that kills your taste buds.”

The soup with normal thickness and the lowest spiciness level looks like dark soy sauce.

For those who still prefer a lighter broth flavour profile, have a go at their Herbal Pot broth. For adventurous foodies, Hendrick from Seth Lui recommends you select their frog meat option (two pieces of frog legs for S$28.90, four pieces of frog legs for S$39.90).

Being a popular weekend haunt, do be prepared to face long queues if you want to go for weekend hotpot, or go on a weekday where cross may not be as thick.
